How we define urban space is highly neglectable. While the urban space is being congested and various forms of transportations occupy the same area, by introducing a new concept we strive to satisfy both the city dwellers, entrepreneurs, local delivery providers and those that are concerned about the ecological aspects of such intensive „movement volume”. As people who are in between all those groups, we wish to create a type of bicycle that could bring together the needs of moving forward (with business and the need to commute) and the need of creating environmentally friendly (but limited) urban capacity and thus ease the traffic congestion. Obviously we could assume the existing products could be transposed into Polish market. Somehow for years they have not made any impact.
Cargo bike for everyone
The cargo bike we are creating is both a response to the need to ensure greater capacity in urban areas and an attempt to introduce a zero-emission transport vehicle to the market. The transport bicycle perceived in this way is an increasingly emphasized segment of pro-ecological policy in the field of last mile logistics. Thanks to a very low TCO, electric support and the possibility of modification depending on the needs, our solution reduces environmental pollution, drastically reduces operating costs, significantly accelerates the operation of the business burdened with urban infrastructure and sets new directions of development in transport.
Engine type (central, axle)
For Urvis, it was decided to use an electric motor located in the rear wheel (hub). The advantage of this solution is that the frame can be used to configure a bicycle with a “classic” drive, ie without the assistance of an electric motor. The maximum power of the electric motor is specified in the PN-EN 15194 (EPAC) standard and it is 250W.
Battery – capacity
A cargo bike, due to its dimensions, weight and method of use, should be equipped with a battery of sufficiently large capacity. We used a battery with the largest available capacity – 740Wh – compatible with the electric motor we have chosen. The battery was placed vertically on the right side of the steering column, just behind the rear wall of the cargo area. The location of the battery allows it to be easily removed from the mounting rail, e.g. for charging (charging can also be done on a bicycle) or replacing it with a discharged battery. There is a controller behind the battery mounting rail.
Field tests have shown that the range of a bicycle equipped with a 740Wh battery is approximately 70 km. Of course, this range depends on road / terrain conditions, weight of transported cargo and weather (temperature).
In the cargo bike, to mount the fork and the steering column, heavy-duty 1 1/8 ”standard rudder bearings are used. The selected headsets are equipped with heavy-duty ACB sealed bearings and 6061-T6 aluminum forged cups.
The size (diameter) of the rear axle of the wheel is dictated by the type of electric motor selected. The axle diameter is 10 mm. In the front wheel, a thru axle with a diameter of 15 mm was used.
At the rear, a popular 26 ”wheel is used. The front has a 20 ”wheel. This makes the front part of the frame more “compact”. The entire wheel and fork assembly takes up much less space. Thanks to this, we gain more cargo space. Another advantage of the 20 “wheel is that it does not” stick out “beyond the frame contour when turning, as if it were the case with larger sizes.
Two-wheel cargo bicycles, in accordance with the DIN 79010 standard, can have a permissible total weight of up to 250 kg. The wheels in such a bicycle are exposed to exceptional loads. The wheels are built on the basis of durable double-walled aluminum rims in which the socket of the spoke holes are additionally reinforced with special sleeves. In addition, oversized stainless steel spokes with a diameter of 2.3 mm were used.
It was assumed that the minimum diameter of the tire that our Urvis will be equipped with is 2.15 ”. The maximum size of the frame and fork is a 2.35 ”tire.
Plug & play solutions for the user
An interesting solution that we used on the cargo space floor are special Airline mounting rails (Allsafe). The rails are made of light aluminum alloy in the form of extradited rectangular profiles with round sockets milled with the use of the CNC method. In these sockets, we can mount various types of mounting elements (e.g. handles in the KERL 500 system).
Analysis of compliance with STvZO
The StVZO bicycle lights are designed to comply with German road traffic regulations, with a beam shaped so as not to dazzle other road users. These lights differ from other lights on the market in that they have a “cut-off” that keeps the beam pointing directly at the road in front of us and theoretically out of sight of other road users when cycling at night. Additionally, according to the regulations of the StVZO, bicycle pedals must be equipped with yellow reflectors pointing forwards and backwards. Side mounted yellow reflectors on the pedals are allowed. Solutions used in the URVIS bike:
